Is Sustainability a thing?

Is sustainability just the newest buzz word, to try and make us feel better about “doing what we can do” to “save the planet” or do we really just not care? Is business and margins more important? Lets flesh it out!

We take pride in creating tools that not only work well but also look beautiful in your hands. With sustainable packaging and distribution practices, you can trust that Genesis Professional Tools are not only functional but environmentally conscious as well.

But my questions and thoughts are, is sustainability, just the newest buzz word, to try and make us feel better about “doing what we can do” to “save the planet” or do we really just not care? It has been SO hard as a business to scale and reach an audience or demographic that wants to be part of a bigger movement, I think we like the idea of “being the hero” but we can’t be bothered really? Why? because it’s too hard isn’t it? The world as a whole makes it hard to be sustainable in our everyday life, let alone our small businesses, take Primark for instance they have a Primark cares range, that is geared towards sustainable clothing, sustainable work practices, recycling and buying. But the irony is, I don’t think anyone does care lol! Do they? We still shop in primark, knowing that parts of their business are unethical. No one consciously goes into primark to run straight to the Primark cares clothing section, we go to Primark because its cheap - ish, LOL!

So what to do about this stage we seem to be in as humans living on this planet, wanting to protect it and show ourselves WE CAN DO THIS? I mean really what’s the point when Kim Kardashian is flying to parts of the US on her private plane to get DESERT???

Same with Education, it’s a buzz word, but are we really as professionals setting ourselves apart from the rest? or are we trying to “fit in” are we leading from the front, or just “going with the flow”? It’s just not enough in my opinion?

Do we feel like Cady in “Mean Girls” trying to fit in, when we know we need to STAND OUT, not always for the reasons we necessarily want too, but we still need to know that there are professionals out there like us/me that still want professionalism and the ethos of perfectionism and professionalism that a lot of us has worked hard for? We are positioned for such a time as this. To STAND UP for what is right and to better the future as an industry and a personal business.

What about education in our industry? Let me just say what everyone else is thinking….. WTH!!!!!! I feel for the beauty therapists who haven’t have the sufficient education, but OMG, we need to get it together, quick time, there are too many professionals and customers that are suffering on the basis that EVERYONE who “does nails” or “educates” is an ACTUAL professional and adequately trained. I mean, you couldn’t employ an accountant without the adequate credentials, I worked so hard to received my education credentials and certification, but it seems that anyone who has 20K followers on social medial or had as great REEL is an AMAZING educator “apparently”. It’s frustrating, but also makes me sad, that our industry is becoming the “reality TV” of the beauty industry. :-(

Us buying “sustainable” isn’t going to make that much of a difference is it? Or is it, is our attitude towards a new business model the change we need to see, or no?

YES WE CAN

Sustainability & Beauty

Beauty Industry Sustainability

I’ve been thinking, especially with the run up to Christmas, and the current energy crisis. What am I doing as an individual to play my part, not only in my home, but as a business owner too!

The pending question to myself is “Is it even worth it!?” and I have decided IT IS!!! If nothing else but to break the generational ignorance of Sustainability, what it means and how we can achieve it. We definitely CAN cause and inspire change, even if it just starts where we are, whether that be at work, outside or in our own homes.

Genesis Professional Tools was birthed out of wanting to inspire and create change within the beauty industry, but it started way before that, when I saw so much wasted packaging being made and discarded in and outside of the beauty industry, it is important that I am passionate about the things that I can potentially change and inspire others to do the same, We have a “Sustainability Program” which is designed to encourage beauty professionals to dispose of their current tools in a sustainable way, all whilst saving money. The tools we sell have been crafted with sustainability in mind, not only creating multi-functional designs (to save money), but to create and dispose of them in a sustainable way too. We aim to give our customers exactly what they want and need all whilst doing our best to contribute towards protecting the planet, keeping an eye on our own personal and business Carbon footprint too. We will diligently look into where we can locally and nationally give back to the community, local business’ and others, through charitable donations and local support.

But I’m not entirely sure the Beauty Industry as a whole is wanting or preparing for this change, is it because the beauty industry is going at such a fast pace now? I believe it is possibly in line with the fashion industry, new trend alerts and not one of those trends includes sustainability. Don’t misunderstand my observations, I am ecstatic that we are becoming such a necessity in peoples essential beauty regimens, however we as a industry should lead the charge in this area, where many others have failed, let’s start as we mean to go on, not having to side step certain areas of our business because we didn’t think FORWARD. Look at the energy crisis now, We have known for YEARS that we would need to switch from oil to a more “renewable” and sustainable energy types. Yet here we are 2022 scrambling around trying to figure out how we can all acquire electric cars and solar panels for our homes before its too late, all whilst the cost of living is rising at an ASTRONOMICAL rate.

I say all of that to say this…. let us as Beauty professionals and business owners LEAD THE WAY in sustainability, before WE have to panic and stress over new innovations coming along. We are born creatives, that is our gift, we CREATE. So why can't we be creative in this sector of our business, innovation starts with an idea/someone why can’t that be US!!!!
